Generally, yarn refers to an unbroken strand consisting of fibres, filaments, or a material where the elements are suitable for sewing, weaving, in any case, the structure of any material, and framing calculations, and it is mathematical discourse. So, Yarn Count Length per unit length of yarn length per unit length Yarn Fineness / Thickness or Thread Thickness / Thinness.
There are two types of yarn counts, firstly, indirect system – English, metric, verst and direct system – text, denier, lbs/spindle.
Actually, Indirect count system is a linear density to describe yarn thickness. Higher the indirect count system or yarn number, the yarn will be finer or lighter. On the other hand, smaller the yarn number or indirect count indicates the coarser or thicker the yarn size. Cotton, worsted, linen (wet spun), etc. are usually used in this count system.
And the Indirect Count measures method is,
w x L
N= ………………
W X l
Here, W = The weight of the sample.
w = The unit weight of the system.
L = The length of the sample.
l = The unit length of the sample.
For Direct count, definite length/fixed is calculated by measuring the mass of yarn. In short, the direct count of yarn is the number of weight units per length unit. Here, the count number indicates the mass per unit length.
As for Direct Count,
W X l
N = ……………..
w X L
Here,
N = The yarn number or, count.
W = The weight of the sample.
w = The unit weight of the sample.
L = The length of the sample.
l = The unit length of the sample.
As I mentioned above, there are more than one Units for measuring these Direct or Indirect Yarn Counts, and there’ a detailed measuring unit below,
English Count System: In this unit, the number of hanks (840 yds) per pound. count. So, the formula is,
Length (yds) 1 pound
English count N =…..……………… X ……………………..
840 yds Weight (Pound)
Metric Count system: In this unit, the number of hanks (1000m) per kg. count. So, the formula is,
Length (m) 1 kg
Metric count N = ……………………X ………………………..
1000m Weight (kg)
Worsted Count System: In this unit, the number of hanks (540yds) per pound. count. . So, the formula is,
Length (yds) 1 Pound
Worsted count N =….…………………X ………………….....
560 (yds) Weight (Pound)
Tex system or Lea count: In this unit, the number of weight in grams of 1000 m. count
Weight (gm) 1000m
Tex count N =………………………X ………………….
1 gm Length (m)
Denier Count System: The number or, count in the denier system is the weight in grams of 9000 m.
Weight (gm) 9000m
Denier count N =………..……………X………………….
1 gm Length
Pounds per spindle System: (Jute system) Count in the pound per spindle system is the weight in pounds of 14400 yards of yarn.
Weight (Pound) 14400 (yds)
Pound per spindle count N=……………………….. X…………………..
1 Pound Length (yds)
